More Filipinos working abroad - NSO

MANILA, Philippines- The total number of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from April to September 2011 jumped by 10 percent to 2.2 million from the 2 million recorded in the previous year, the National Statistics Office (NSO) reported Tuesday.
NSO said out of this number, overseas contract workers or those with existing work contracts comprised 95.3 percent of the total OFWs in 2011.
Among OFWs, the males accounted for 52.2 percent while females were at 47.8 percent. The largest age group was the 25 to 29-year-old age bracket which made up 23.6 percent of the total. This was followed by the 30 to 34-year-old group at 22.6 percent, NSO said.
It added that OFWs from CALABARZON (Cavite Laguna, Batangas, Rizal amd Quezon) accounted for 16.5 percent of the total, while those from Central Luzon and the National Capital Region constituted 14.3 percent and 12.5 percent, respectively.
"Saudi Arabia continued to be the leading destination of OFWs with 22.6 percent of the total OFWs working in this country during the period April to September 2011. The other countries in Asia which were popular destinations of OFWs were United Arab Emirates (14.6 percent), Qatar (6.9 percent), Singapore (6.3 percent) and Hong Kong (5.3 percent)," NSO said.
