Amidst Sunday's stormy weather, Malaysian marine police rescued some 30 Filipinos whose storm-hit boat marooned them on Pulau Balambagan island off northern Sabah.
After they sailed to Pulau Balambagan, the marine police then trekked for almost two hours to get to the Filipinos, who included 25 men, two women and three children, Malaysia's The Star reported.
The Filipinos had been marooned for about five days in the Lok Simpol area and were lethargic from hunger. They were immediately given food and water.
Sabah's Kudat police chief Deputy Superintendent Dawi Ossen said the children were between 1 and 13 years of age and the adults were between 19 and 55.
He said marine police were informed of the marooned people at about 4:30 a.m. A special team of 20 men with two marine police boats then rushed to the area.
The Filipinos were turned over to the Malaysian Red Crescent, which will provide them shelter and food assistance until they return to Philippines.
Citing initial reports, Dawi said the victims were on a domestic trip from Tawi-Tawi to Balabac, Palawan when strong waves damaged their boat "sometime after July 28."
