Fil-Am Cheesa gets lukewarm praise on 'The Voice'

MANILA, Philippines – Fil-Am contestant Cheesa Laureta received good but not great comments from the judges of the US talent show “The Voice” on Monday night (Tuesday morning in Manila) for her performance of the disco song “Don’t Leave Me This Way.”
Laureta made it to the show’s Top 24 and appeared on her first performance show on Monday with 11 other contestants. The first batch of 12 contestants had their first performance show last week.
“I actually loved that,” judge Blake Shelton told Laureta. “I was like watching ‘Solid Gold.’ It was the perfect song for you.”
Judge Adam Levine, meanwhile, praised Laureta’s showmanship but noted that there are many talented contestants on the show, which will make it difficult to stand out.
“I’m not sure that happened,” he said.
Laurete’s mentor, Cee Lo Green, however, was satisfied with her rendition of the Thelma Houston classic. “I believe that was a wonderful song number,” he said. “I enjoyed it and I think the people enjoyed it.”
On “The Voice,” contestants are assigned to the different judges who will also act as their mentor throughout the show.
Laurete will have to compete with the five other contestants in Green’s team. The public will vote their three favorites who will move on to the next round, while the bottom three contestants will be given one more chance to win over the judges on the results show on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning in Manila). Their mentor can save only one, sending two contestants home.
Tough competition
TV critics believes Laurete’s chances are slim, given the tough competition on Green’s team.
“Cheesa is still battling the attacks from viewers who said she should be home watching the rest of the competition on television. And based on the reviews from Blake and Adam who both had positive but lukewarm remarks about Chessa’s take on the disco hit, Chessa might have to hear more backlash in tomorrow night’s elimination round. Cheesa gave it her best shot, the worrisome thing is, her best might not be good enough to move her further along in the competition,” said the Wall Street Journal.
Among her competitors are heartthrob James Massone, who performed Norah Jones’s pop-jazz hit “Don’t Know Why” to the delight of his female fans.
“Massone gave the best performance of the show at this point. Massone milked the song’s lush arrangement and practically floated out to the crowd to touch hands with the screaming ladies. At the end of the performance, even Blake admitted he wanted to throw his panties on stage,” the Wall Street Journal said.
There is also Juliet Simms, who rocked “Roxanne” by The Police, and earned a standing ovation from the judges.
“The night’s other stellar performance comes from another Team Cee Lo member. Simms opened up her set with a smoldering intro and then with that voice of hers — all throat and guts — gives a performance that left all four judges standing on their feet at the end. At this point in the competition, Team Cee Lo is looking like the team to beat,” the Wall Street Journal said.
For entertainment website, Hollywood Life, the best performance was given by Jamar Rogers, who performed Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way.”
“Jamar Rogers closed the show with a superstar performance that proved he’s got the quality’s to be big. He worked the crowd while keeping his vocals intact,” the website said.
The other members of Team Cee Lo are Broadway rocker Tony Vincent, who gave a theatrical flair to Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” and model Erin Martin, who made her entrance on a chariot with buff male dancers while singing The Bangles’ hit “Walk Like An Egyptian.”
