Sanchez slips to No. 2 on 'Idol' rankings

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-Mexican-American contestant Jessica Sanchez lost the top spot of a U.S. magazine’s “American Idol” rankings on Wednesday and slipped to No. 2.
Top male contestant Phillip Phillips vaulted to the top from No. 3 at the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly’s Power Rankings based on the contestants performances the previous week.
“My lifelong devotion to Stevie Nicks could be blinding me here, but as soon as the guest mentor told Phil that he'd have been asked to join Fleetwood Mac in a heartbeat, my estimation of him soared. Jonny Lang’s ‘Still Rainin’ was a smart, non-pandering choice for him last week, and his momentum shows no signs of slowing,” the magazine said on its website.
Sanchez, who held the top spot of the Power Rankings three times since the live performances started, failed to get a standing ovation last week for her slow version of Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams.”
Judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez gave standing ovations to five contestants, including Heejun Han, who was eliminated last Thursday (Friday morning in Manila).
Still, the judges praised Sanchez’s performance – and so did TV critics.
“She keeps hovering around the top spot and she's not going anywhere. Last week’s Beyoncé cover was pitch perfect and since the judges all noticed she'd been holding back, we can expect some sort of huge diva wail from Jessica tonight,” Entertainment Weekly said.
Elise Testone jumped in the magazine’s rankings – from No. 5 to No. 3 – for her performance of the Led Zeppelin classic “Whole Lotta Love.” However, the magazine has doubts if kids – which make up a big chunk of “Idol” voters – will support Testone.
Another early favorite, Colton Dixon, fell three spots to No. 5, despite Jackson’s prediction of a Dixon-Sanchez showdown in the finale.
“Colton was just middle of the pack last week. It didn't help that he had to sing first,” the magazine said of the rocker’s performance of Lifehouse’s “Everything.”
At the bottom of the magazine’s rankings is DeAndre Brackensick, who earned a standing ovation for his falsetto-rich performance of Eric Benet’s “Sometimes I Cry.”
For this week, the “Idol” contestants will perform songs from the 1980s with mentor Gwen Stefani of No Doubt.
