Now in 'American Idol' Top 6, Jessica Sanchez has chance to surpass Jasmine Trias

After getting a second chance at winning the "American Idol" crown, Jessica Sanchez made it to top six of the reality television singing competition.

Sanchez, born in the United States of Filipina mother and a Mexican father, has now the second best finish so far among the Filipino-Americans who joined the contest.

Jasmine Trias has so far had the best achievement by a Filipino-American in the competition, making it to Top 3 in the third season of American Idol.

Sanchez, 16, was nearly booted out of the American Idol competition last week when she garnered the lowest votes among the seven remaining contestants.

Judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler used their lone "save" this season to overrule the results of the vote.

On Wednesday's episode (Thursday in Manila), Sanchez sang two songs:
  • "Fallin" by Alicia Keys, and
  • "Try A Little Tenderness" by Otis Redding.

On the news site Newsday, Tyler, Aerosmith band's frontman, said he was happy that Sanchez unleashed her passion.

Singer, actress, and record producer Lopez said she loved how Sanchez played with the song and called it insane.

Record producer and music manager Jackson said: "I don't even know if you know how good you really are, and how great you can be."

This week's 'bottom three'

Meanwhile, on the Thursday episode (Friday in the Philippines), the three contestants who made it to the bottom three were: Elise Testone, Hollie Cavanagh, and Colton Dixson.

In the end, Dixson's renditions of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" and Earth Wind and Fire's "September" didn't appear to wow enough voters to save him, as he leaves the competition.

With Dixson's departure, Sanchez now has a chance to make it even farther in American Idol, a show that has seen several Filipino-Americans rise to fame.

Before Sanchez, latest "Idol" contestant of Filipino descent was Thia Megia who finished in the Top 11 of last year's competition.

Before her came Ramiele Malubay who placed 9th in the seventh season.
