Tribute to PHL flag held in New York

To mark Flag Day on May 28 and Independence Day this June 12, the Philippine Consulate General in New York held an exhibit dedicated to the Philippine flag.

The "Tribute to the Philippine Flag" was mounted at the Philippine Center New York's window fronting Fifth Avenue.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the artworks — all with the Philippine flag as a backdrop — will be on exhibit throughout June.

The works on exhibit include:
  • "Millennium" (By Manuel Rodriguez, Sr., 1998, acrylic on canvas, 48" X 35")
  • "Pilipinas Kong Mahal" (By Emil Sano, 2001, painted wood, 14" X 11" X 2.5")
  • "Filipinos Pride" (By Bianca Marquez, ceramic mosaic, 20" X 15")
  • "Malaya" (Dr. William Chua, 2004, oil on canvas, 24" X 20"), and
  • "Smile Series" (Bren Bataclan, 2009, acrylic on canvas, 14" X 11" each).

The tribute, a concept of Consul Elena Maningat and Cultural Officer Marievic Dimaculangan, was accomplished with the help of the Philippine Center Management.

The exhibit features a selection from the art collection of the Philippine Center, each with the Philippine flag as subject.

A graphic sticker featuring this year's Independence Day theme — "Kalayaan, Pananagutan ng Bayan para sa Tuwid na Daan" — is also posted outside the PHL Center display window.

The DFA said the sticker was designed by Filipino American graphics designer Anthony Castro.

"The general sentiment is that it is a successful reminder of the significance and importance of Independence Day, as well as an exhibition of the varied ways artists interpret the idea of patriotism by honoring the flag," the DFA said.

It added that those who would like to view the exhibit may visit the Center at 556 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan, New York City. - VVP, GMA News
