MANILA, Philippines - A Pinay drummer snatched the third place in the international drumming competition for women, "Hit Like A Girl 2012".
"Thanks for your love and support. Thanks HLAG (HIt Like A Girl) for giving us an opportunity to share our talents to the world. Kudos to all HLAG contestants. You gals rock!! All the glory belongs to our God," Karmi Santiago wrote on her Facebook account.
As third placer, Santiago will receive $1,500 worth of drumming gear from TRX, Vater, Evans, SKB and Alfred.
The contest earlier picked 15 finalists, including the top 12 popular vote recipients and three wild-card entrants chosen by the competition’s sponsors.
“With so many great players to choose from, picking the top three drummers was nearly impossible; let alone choosing the top one,” said Sheila E., one of the panel of celebrity drummer judges.
Santiago has been playing the drums for 10 years and has covered almost all music genres, including jazz, classical, pop, soul, rock and alternative.
Aside from Santiago, the grand prize winner was D'Arcus "dbaby" Curry from the USA who will receive a complete drum set package worth about $6,000; and Angieszka "AgaDrummer" Matusczak from Poland in second place who will get $2,500 worth of drumming gear.
"This year all the women and girls who participated really raised the bar," Sheila E. added.
The contest website said all three winners will be featured on Hit Like A Girl 2012, in upcoming issues of DRUM! and Tom Tom magazines and online at DrumChannel.com and Enter Music Network affiliates DRUMmagazine.com, DrummerCafe.com, DrummerConnection.com, OnlineDrummer.com and SickDrummerMagazine.com.
The contest received hundreds of video entries from female drummers as young as 8 and as old as 55, based in 30 countries.
"By bringing many of today’s most popular drum brands together with the industry’s leading print and electronic media, Hit Like A Girl 2012 celebrated the impact of women drummers’ contributions to contemporary music while supporting their continuing growth and increasing relevance within the worldwide drumming community," the contest said.
