A Philippine dance team has brought pride once again to the country by capturing first place in the World Hip Hop Dance Championship Adult Division held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“The Crew” of the University of the Philippines’ Street Dance Club bested dance teams from 43 countries after getting a score of 7.39 in the adult division finals.
Mexico placed second, while the United States landed in third place.
“[It’s] a miracle. We didn’t really expect it,” one of the members of The Crew said.
“Mahal namin ‘yung ginagawa namin. Even if wala talagang sumusuporta sa amin, gagawa kami ng paraan to be here, para lumipad to represent our country and para talaga gawin ‘to. Mahal namin ‘yung sayaw, mahal namin si God,” another said.
Chet Buchanan, host of the World Hip Hop Championship, meanwhile said: “[The Philippines] It’s such a proud nation and they take hip hop seriously.”
The Philippine Allstars, who won the 2008 World Hip Hop Championship, also extended their congratulations to The Crew.
“2012 World Hip Hop Dance Champions… From the Philippines, The Crew! Congratulations! Woooooooh! Pinas Pataas!” the group said.
The dance group Jabbawockeez, which mostly consists of Filipino-Americans, received the World Hip Hop Living Legend Award in this year’s competition.
In an earlier competition, the UP StreetDance Club won the bronze medal in the MegaCrew category of the World Hip Hop Dance Championship.
